Award-winning journalist Andrew McCulloch covers all things UTRGV for the Monitor News.
McCulloch also covers high school sports and has had a whirlwind past few weeks. Covering the high school playoffs was a memorable event. McCulloch has been on Good Morning America and featured on other media outlets for reporting on an incident where a player basically attacked an official. Crazy story.
UTRGV is 3-2 on the season with losses at Texas and at Texas A&M. The Vaqueros are deeper in 2020-21 and its showing. Sean Rhea has continued his growth as has Quinton Johnson II. Javon Levi continues to be the floor leader but with the depth the Vaqueros have, there is less pressure on the senior guard.
Western Kentucky transfer Marek Nelson is making his mark at UTRGV. Nelson had to sit out the 2019-20 season due to transfer rules but has hit the ground running.
The missing piece to a possible WAC title run is big man Jeff Otchere. The former America East Defensive Player of the Year has yet to play a minute for UTRGV. But, once Otchere takes the floor, watch out for the Vaqueros.
