The CBU Lancers have not lost a conference game in nearly two years. And CBU continued its role through WAC play Thursday. CBU was one of four teams to win at home on Thursday. The lone road win went to Utah Valley who got big games out of a pair of veterans.
Although we didn’t get the much anticipated showdown between Grand Canyon and Stephen F. Austin in Phoenix we still had a competitive slate of games to start the weekend.
CBU 85, Tarleton State 69
In Riverside, the Lancers again fell behind early but got going and pulled away from the Texans for their 22nd-straight Western Athletic Conference win.
Ane Oleta led the charge with 21 points, nine assists, five steals, and four rebounds. She had 19 points after the intermission. Caitlyn Harper was also in double figures with 21 points and four rebounds. For a fourth straight game, the Lancers hit double digits in made 3-pointers.
Tarleton State was led by Iyana Dorsey’s 18 points. Malaya Kendrick had 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals while Seynabou Thiam chipped in 12 points, 14 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks for the Texans.
Seattle 75, Abilene Christian 61
At the Redhawk Center, it was Seattle getting their first win of conference play behind a 29-10 fourth quarter outburst which turned a 5-point deficit into a comfortable win.
Georgia Kehoe led the way with 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Bree Calhoun added 16 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Courtney Murphy also added 13 points.
Jamie Bonnarens had 16 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Wildcats. Emma Middleton added 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Madi Miller contributed another 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists in defeat.
Abilene Christian bounced back from hitting a lone three at home against New Mexico State last Saturday to hit ten on Thursday. But the Wildcats allowed Seattle to shoot a blistering 72.2% (13-18) in the fourth quarter.
Utah Valley 59, UTRGV 56
In a close game throughout, Utah Valley came up with the winning plays to earn a second straight conference win in Edinburg.
Madison Grange and Josie Williams combined to score 45 of the 59 Wolverine points in the win. Grange went off for a career-high 24 points and hit six 3-pointers in the process. Grange also hit the go ahead 3-pointer with 30.5 seconds left. Williams added 21 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and two steals for Utah Valley.
Iva Belosevic led the Vaqueros with 17 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Kacee Kyle added 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals in defeat.
Lamar 75, Dixie State 65
In Beaumont, the Cardinals evened their conference mark at .500 with a 10-point win over the Trailblazers.
Akasha Davis had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lamar. Malay McQueen hit five 3-pointers and added 17 points. Sabria Dean and Anyssia Gibbs each chipped in 14 points.
Shanaijah Davidson led Dixie State with 18 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Emily Issacson and Macie Warren each had 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
New Mexico State 72, Sam Houston State 59
After losing two games last week during a Texas two-step, I’m sure Brooke Atkinson and her Aggies were happy to return home. They certainly made the home fans happy with a 13-point win over a Bearkats squad still looking for their first WAC win under interim coach Brittany Mason.
Molly Kaiser led a balanced Aggie attack with 13 points. Taylor Donaldson added 12 points and eight rebounds as New Mexico State got back to .500.
Sam Houston State got 16 points and four rebounds from Damaya Telemaque along with 14 points from Faith Cook and 11 points and three rebounds from Courtney Cleveland in defeat.
