GCU insider Paul Coro joins the podcast on Monday afternoon. The Lopes have a new head coach, new system and a new opportunity to do big things.
Former Vanderbilt star Bryce Drew is at the helm in Phoenix. Drew is most remembered for hitting a buzzer-beater shot to send his Alma Mater Valparaiso into round two of the NCAA Tournament. You’ll have to check it out on YouTube.
Drew takes over for Dan Majerle and actually has a pretty full cupboard to work with. Alessandro Lever and Jovan Blacksher Jr. return. Mikey Dixon is back. Gabe McGlothan is healthy. And Oscar Frayer returns after sitting out the 2019-20 season due to academic issues.
Drew brought in a pair of freshman as well as some Division I transfers. Perhaps the biggest name Drew brought in (no pun intended) is 7-footer Asbjørn Midtgaard from Wichita State. Coro says that Midtgaard gives the Lopes rim protection, which GCU hasn’t seen in some time. Add in guard Sean Miller-Moore from Oregon State and freshman Liam Lloyd and Jayden Stone and Drew has a pretty solid roster.
GCU also released its non-conference schedule on Monday. The Lopes host Grambling State to open the season and also host crosstown foe Arizona State in the first-ever meeting between the schools. GCU travels to Las Vegas in December to take on San Francisco and Colorado. Coro believes it is a challenging schedule and that there are some really sneaky games in there like the season opener and the final non-conference game in February against CSU Northridge.
Coro also talks about what to expect offensively from the Lopes under Drew. With a big man inside, Coro believes that Alessandro Lever can expand his game even more. This gives Lever an opportunity to show that he is a true stretch-4 man.
Paul Coro is the insider for a reason and gives some great information in this episode of the WAC Hoops Digest podcast.
