Head Coach Returns to Lead Bearkats to Big Win in Women’s Recap

Remember when we said that Wednesday was WACky on the men’s side? Well, on Thursday, the Sam Houston Bearkats made things WACky on the women’s side. Faith Cook had a career night in head coach Ravon Justice’s return as the Bearkats knocked off CBU. Abilene Christian fell behind 10-0 before pushing its lead to 30 in the fourth quarter. Utah Valley finally had a blow out win. Just a wild night on the women’s side.

Here is the recap from a busy Thursday evening of WAC women’s basketball…

Sam Houston 73, CBU 65

“Closing time. Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end….”

Those song lyrics from the classic “Closing Time” by songwriter Dan Wilson can describe many things including CBU’s 25-game Western Athletic Conference winning streak which came to an end at the hands of the Bearkats.

Thursday’s contest, which saw the return of Bearkats coach Ravon Justice after a two month leave of absence, saw guard Faith Cook have a career night with 32 points as the Bearkats rocked the mid-major women’s basketball world with a big upset. Madelyn Batista added another double double of 18 points and 16 rebounds in support of Cook.

CBU struggled from deep, only connecting on five 3-pointers against the Bearkats defense. It was the Lancers second lowest output from outside during their impressive streak. Ane Olaeta had 17 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals to lead the way. Caitlyn Harper added 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals while Sydney Palma chipped in 14 points and 4 rebounds.

Stephen F. Austin 76, Seattle 57

While CBU fell in Huntsville, Stephen F. Austin did what they were supposed to on Thursday and dispatched the Redhawks to grab a one-game lead in a very competitive race for the regular season crown.

Stephanie Visscher had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists to lead the Lumberjacks. Zya Nugent added 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 assists while Aiyana Johnson chipped in 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

The win begins a stretch of three games in six days which culminates in a Monday evening trip to Phoenix and Grand Canyon.

For a second straight game, it was just a struggle for the Redhawks to score as they were held to 33 percent overall shooting and 21 percent from 3-point range. Georgia Kehoe had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks for Seattle.

Utah Valley 82, Chicago State 62

After an 0-3 start to WAC play, the Wolverines have won three out of four to reach .500. And with each win buy themselves some rest heading into the conference tournament.

Babalu Stewart had 22 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists to lead the Wolverines. Maria Carvalho added 20 points, 3 rebounds, and 7 assists for Utah Valley while Josie Williams chipped in with 18 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Allysah Boothe had 11 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds for Chicago State.

Abilene Christian 88, UTRGV  69

After a disappointing West Coast trip which saw their hopes of a regular season title fall away with losses at Seattle and CBU, the Wildcats returned to Teague and defeated the Vaqueros, earning win 900. ACU outscored the Vaqueros 47-24 in those middle quarters for a comfortable win to start the weekend.

Madi Miller had 18 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds to lead ACU. Jamie Bonnarens added 16 points and 4 rebounds while Emma Middleton and Bella Earle combined for 23 points off the bench. Middleton had 12 points and 5 rebounds while Earle chipped in 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Sara Bershers returned after missing a couple of games and led the Vaqueros with 16 points and 4 rebounds. Meanwhile, Jessica Martino added 13 points and 2 rebounds for UTRGV.

Lamar 53, Tarleton 45

At Wisdom Gym, the Cardinals earned their 10th win of the year behind a big day from Akasha Davis who went for 21 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.

Iyana Dorsey had 19 points to lead the Texans.

Lamar has won three straight WAC games.
