The weekly basketball awards were announced on Monday by the Western Athletic Conference. UTRGV guard Justin Johnson is the Player of the Week. And GCU guard Kobe Knox is the Freshman of the Week.
Johnson Goes Off in Pair of Wins
Justin Johnson is one of the best players in the WAC. And during Feast Week, Johnson showed why. The senior forward averaged 26.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists for the Vaqueros. In a win over Western Illinois, Johnson went for a game-high 34 points while shooting 50 percent from the field. One night later against Northern Arizona, Johnson had a game-high 26 points to lead the Vaqueros to their second-straight win.
On Saturday at No. 4 Texas, Johnson again had a big day with a team-high 18 points. As of this write-up, Johnson is averaging 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and shooting 47 percent from the field for the 4-3 Vaqueros.
UTRGV hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday in the second part of the South Texas Showdown.
Knox Shows Out in Big Win
Kobe Knox has now had a pair of breakout games for the GCU Lopes. And that performance in Saturday’s win over Benedictine Mesa earned Knox Freshman of the Week honors.
Knox played a season-high 25 minutes and had a season-high 14 points. The 6-5 redshirt freshman was 5-10 from the field and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. Along with the 14 points, Knox also had seven rebounds and two steals in the contest.
The other big performance came on Nov. 10 in GCU’s win over San Diego Christian. Knox had 11 points in 16 minutes on a perfect shooting night from the field. This includes a steal and slam in the second half.

GCU has arguably the toughest part of its schedule coming up. The Lopes host Alcorn State on Tuesday. And then the Lopes head to the high plains to take on Wyoming before returning home to host Loyola Marymount next Wednesday.
