There were four other games around the WAC on Thursday night. Utah Valley picked up its ninth straight win. Tarleton had an unlikely hero in a big home win. Seattle U was able to escape South Texas unscathed. And California Baptist finally, FINALLY, shot the ball well.
Here is the rapid recap.
Utah Valley 72, UT Arlington 64
In one of the rare instances of the 2022-23 season, Mark Madsen changed up his starting lineup. And, the change worked to perfection. Justin Harmon came off the bench for the first time for Utah Valley. And Harmon made an immediate impact.
Harmon finished with a game-high 21 points to lead Utah Valley to the road win at College Park Center. Aziz Bandaogo had 13 and 12 rebounds. And Trey Woodbury finished with 14 points for the Wolverines.
It is the ninth straight win for Utah Valley who improves to 12-4 overall and 3-0 in WAC play.
Kyron Gibson and Shemar Wilson each had 13 points for the Mavericks. Wilson also pulled down 14 rebounds for UTA who fell to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in WAC play.
Utah Valley is at UTRGV on Saturday while UT Arlington hosts Seattle on Saturday.
Tarleton 68, Southern Utah 65
Tarleton did Tarleton things on Thursday night. The Texans held Tevian Jones to just nine points and got a big performance off the bench from sophomore Garry Clark in the 68-65 win at Wisdom Gym.
Clark finished with a game-high 20 points and three other Texans were in double figures in the win. Lue Williams had 15 points. Shakur Daniel had 13 points and Noah McDavid finished with 10 points.
Drake Allen and Maizen Fausett each had 14 for the T-Birds. Jason Spurgin was also in double figures with 11 points.
Tarleton heads to Sam Houston on Saturday and Southern Utah will head to ACU for a Saturday afternoon tip.
Seattle U 66, UTRGV 64
There are no nights off in the Western Athletic Conference. And Seattle U learned that on Thursday night in Edinburg. Sherman Brashear’s 3-pointer with 1:27 to play gave UTRGV a 62-60 lead. But Alex Schumacher responded with four straight points to give the Redhawks the lead for good.
However, after Matthew Levis missed a pair of free throws that could have sealed the win, UTRGV had a shot. And Justin Johnson got a good look. Unfortunately, the 3-pointer didn’t fall and the Redhawks escaped.
Cam Tyson had another big performance at UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tyson finished with a game-high 27 points and knocked down five 3-pointers. Alex Schumacher also had 16 points for the Redhawks.
UTRGV was led by Justin Johnston’s team-high 19 points. Dima Zdor finished with 13 points. Sherman Brashear finished with 11 points. And Daylen Williams had 12 points and 15 rebounds.
The Redhawks are at UT Arlington Saturday while UTRGV hosts Utah Valley.
California Baptist 72, Utah Tech 58
There was no epic comeback on Thursday night at the CBU Events Center. And it is because of the Lancers’ offensive explosion in the second half. Led by Scotty Washington who score six straight points midway through the second half, the Lancers picked up their first conference win of the 2022-23 season.
Washington finished with a team-high 17 points. And it was Washington who awoke a sleeping giant on Thursday. CBU had struggled offensively all season. And in a game that was going back and forth in the second half, Washington knocked down a couple of shots from the perimeter and it became contagious.
Joe Quintana hit a couple of 3-pointers down the stretch and CBU rolled to the double digit win. It was like watching the Lancers of old.
CBU heads to Las Cruces to take on New Mexico State on Saturday. Utah Tech is off until next Thursday when the Trailblazers host Stephen F. Austin.
