Just as UTRGV gets ready to play its first WAC series since Jan. 16, one of its big men decided to leave the program. Redshirt junior Sean Rhea has entered the transfer portal according to a tweet from Verbal Commits.

2020-21 continues to be a wild year. Starters from schools all over the Nation are entering the transfer portal in the middle of the season. And Rhea adds his name to the list.
The 6’8 forward from Houston is sixth in the WAC in scoring at 15.2 points per game. Rhea is also averaging 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 54 percent from the field. And he has been a starter 11 times in 12 games this season. In 2019-20, Rhea averaged 6.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in getting adjusted to the UTRGV system.
Wherever the big man lands, someone will be getting a steal who has only gotten better. However, it will come with some baggage. Landing at a new school means it will be the fourth school in four years for Rhea.
Rhea played his freshman season at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. As an Islander, Rhea averaged 9.4 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the floor. Rhea transferred from A&M-CC following the season to New Mexico Junior College where he played just three games due to injury.
And then he landed at UTRGV where Lew Hill was willing to give him a chance. The redshirt junior even said so at Lew Hill’s Memorial Service on Tuesday.

UTRGV took the floor for the first time in nearly a month on Sunday and the redshirt junior had another stellar performance. Against Dallas Christian, Rhea had 19 points and five rebounds in just 14 minutes. The Houston native was 7-10 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line in the win.
The Vaqueros play at Utah Valley on Friday and Saturday. UTRGV, as of now, finishes its regular season at home against Tarleton State next weekend. Rhea has been a big piece of the Vaqueros in 2020-21. UTRGV is 9-4 overall and 2-0 in WAC play.
