WAC Announces Scheduling Format for 2020-21 Conference Play

On Wednesday morning, the WAC announced the scheduling format for the 2020-21 conference season. The presidents of each institution voted on a format that will reduce safety hazards and possible transmission of Covid-19.

Here is what the release from the WAC says.

“For basketball, the conference portion of the schedule will begin on Jan. 7 and will feature back-to-back games against the same opponent at the same site. Each team will host four opponents and travel to four opponents over the course of nine weeks. The WAC Basketball Tournaments are set for March 10-13 at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.”

Unfortunately, the home-and-home scenario is not going to happen this season. The actual schedule will come at a later time. However, the format is set and now the conference schedule can be put together.

In Other Scheduling News….

This is a basketball site but sometimes it’s about the entire WAC sports nation. And with the release of the basketball format, other announcements were made with regard to some fall sports.

Track and Field

It was also decided that the WAC will not hold an Indoor Track and Field Championship in 2021. The meet was scheduled at the same time as the rescheduled WAC Cross Country Championship, which will take place on Feb. 27 at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle. Indoor Track and Field student-athletes will still be allowed to compete during the scheduled season at institutional discretion.”

Volleyball

“Volleyball is expected to begin the nine-week conference schedule in the last week of January. The nine-week schedule will be a double round-robin with back-to-back matches between the same two teams at the same site. The six-team WAC Volleyball Tournament is set for April 1-3 at Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M.”

Soccer – Men and Women

“Men’s soccer will open the rescheduled WAC season on Feb. 6. The schedule will consist of a single round-robin leading up to a six-team WAC Tournament on April 14-18 at Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas.

Women’s soccer is expected to begin on Feb. 18 and will feature a double round-robin with back-to-back matches against the same opponent at the same site. The schedule also features two single-match weeks for all teams. The eight-week regular season schedule will be followed by the WAC Women’s Soccer Tournament on April 14-18 at GCU Stadium in Phoenix.”
