There were two WAC games on the slate for Sunday. A pair of Big West Conference foes were on the agenda for California Baptist and Seattle.
The Lancers took on UC Riverside in the Crosstown Showdown and Seattle played host to UC San Diego at Climate Pledge Arena. And both had very different outcomes.
UC Riverside 70, California Baptist 54
Despite a career-high 24 points from Dan Akin, the Lancers were never able to get going offensively. Coming into Sunday, the Lancers were averaging nearly 75 points per game. But, rivalry games are a different pill. CBU was just 2-13 from 3-point land in the loss. And outside of 12 points from Ty Rowell, no other Lancer was in double figures. Highly-touted freshman Taran Armstrong finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
J.P. Moorman II led UC Riverside with 19 points. Flynn Cameron and Zyon Pullin both had 18 for the Highlanders. UC Riverside was 9-27 from deep in the contest.
The trip across town was one of just three true road games CBU plays in its non-conference schedule. In its first road test, the Lancers lost 68-44 at No. 7 Texas. And in their second road test, the Lancers fell short again. UC Riverside came in with a KenPom ranking of 144, second highest on the CBU schedule. And uses a 17-3 run early in the first half to take control. CBU got within nine a few times in the second half. But every time the Highlanders had a response.
CBU drops to 8-2 overall and travel to Tucson on Saturday to take on Arizona who may be the No. 1 ranked team in the country this week. The Lancers begin WAC play at on New Year’s Day by hosting Seattle.

Trammell, Grigsby Shoot Seattle to Victory
It has been somewhat of a slow start to the 2021-22 season for WAC Preseason Player of the Year Darrion Trammell. But, on Sunday night at Climate Pledge Arena, Trammell took all of that frustration out on UC San Diego. Trammell was 12-20 from the field, hit three 3-pointers and had a game-high 29 points in the win. Riley Grigsby was also efficient in the win going 8-12 from the field to finish with 17 points.
Trammell is on ??? He has 22. UCSD has 22.

As a team, Seattle shot nearly 54 percent from the field and hit eight 3-pointers in the contest. About the only thing that didn’t happen for Seattle were trips to the free throw line. Seattle was just 3-5 from the charity stripe. But, it didn’t matter as the Redhawks rolled to their 8th win of the season behind their dynamic guards.
Next up for the Redhawks is a trip across town to take on Washington on Saturday. The Redhawks finish up non-conference play by hosting non-DI opponent Northwest on Dec. 22.
