In 2016-17, Suzy Barcomb took the Seattle U women’s basketball team to the WNIT. The following season, Barcomb led the Redhawks to a WAC Tournament title and trip to the NCAA Tournament.
However, the Redhawks have averaged just 8.8 wins over the past five seasons. In fact, the Redhawks have failed to have a winning season since finishing 18-15 in 2017-18.
After the Redhawks finished 6-24 overall in 2022-23, Seattle U athletic director Shaney Fink made a decision.
Fink made the decision to not retain Suzy Barcomb after seven seasons and two postseason appearances.
“After thorough evaluation, I have decided that a change in leadership is needed in order to meet our high standards of competitive excellence for the women’s basketball program,” said Director of Athletics Shaney Fink in a university release announcing the change. “I want to thank Suzy Barcomb and her staff for their commitment to Seattle University and to the growth and development of student athletes.”
This year’s edition of the Redhawks started out 0-11 with one game cancelled against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Five of those losses were by less than 10 points or in overtime.
In WAC play, the Redhawks were 5-13, earning an 11-seed in the WAC tournament. The Redhawks took on 6-seed UT Arlington. It was an opportunity that Seattle took full advantage of, upsetting the Lady Mavs at Mandalay Bay. Taliyah Clark had 23 points in the upset win. Clark hit five 3-pointers that Monday evening.
On Wednesday evening, Seattle U gave 3-seed GCU everything it could handle, leading for much of that game before falling 85-80. Clark five more triples and led the Redhawk attack with 22 points. In a pair of tourney games, Clark averaged 22.5 points.
Barcomb finishes her first Division I head coaching job with a record of 77-133 and has recorded 409 wins across all three levels of NCAA basketball.
Her final Redhawk team had only one senior and was looking to use the tournament victory as a springboard to a big 2023-24 season
With Monday’s announcement from Seattle there will be at least two WAC programs with new head coaches next season.
Tarleton will reportedly hire former Baylor assistant and current head coach at McLennan Community College Bill Brock. Tarleton parted ways with long-time head coach and Texan Hall of Famer Misty Wilson following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season..
